tried win10 for a few days after years on Apple.
Quite like it, but problems I didn't anticipate:

Scaling issues when the external screen is lower res than the main screen (laptop)

    No Helvetica

Ridiculous system of typing an EM or EN — – dash on a keyboard without a number pad.

    Settings resetting themselves

Windows Backup only works with one backup drive. So you can't for example, back up at home and off site as you can with Time Machine on Mac. At least not without resetting the settings each time. Each swap is followed by the PC 'not recognising the disk'...All minor but collectively a ball ache or equivalent.

Would love solutions though if anyone knows of any...

    • no helvetica lol? haven't you got Helvetica anyway?fadein11
    • - Install Helvetica.mekk
    • The resolution issue is a known-known and will, I'd assume, be sorted out in a wee while. Helvetica's your problem. Em-En dashes similarly (buy a numpad?)detritus
    • Settings shouldn't reset themselves - you sure you have appropriate user privileges?detritus
    • I have Helv because I have a mac. Paying another £1000 doesn't do it for me. Detritus — the backup thing?craigatkinson
    • I use win10 with a 3 display setup (4k main screen, 2nd smaller screen and projector) w/o any scaling issues.sted
    • Settings reset if system applies some major update from time to timedrgs
    • sted it has to be from a laptop to external screen. If laptop is higher res than ext screen it fucks upcraigatkinson
    • so ... buy a number pad to type en and em dashes correctly?monospaced
    • mono, to carry with the laptop? Kind of defeats the point of a laptop?craigatkinson
    • yeah, I was asking because that sounds as ridiculous as having to have an adapter to charge :/monospaced
    • oh i see that is so weird. and you can't access the resolution settings for the display? if it's grayed out you need to install a proper driver for itsted
    • I'm sure there's great 3rd party backup software to handle your multiple hard drives with ease. Some HDs even come with it.monospaced
    • I forgot about the special character thing in Windows. I used to search google and copy and paste because it was quicker than looking up the code.monoboy
    • ©®éü’”È° ... all in a  keystroke.monoboy
    • How are — and –s done on the mac? i'd never work on a keyboard without a number pad — so much stuff I do on muscle memory relies on it being there..detritus
    • – — alt and alt-shift for M or N dash.monoboy
    • Ah, that is smarter, yes — i have a load of Alt Codes memorised for things like that™detritus
    • the vast majority of special characters can be typed easily on Macsmonospaced
    • So too on Windows. It's just remembering what they all are that's tricky...detritus
    • i use syncbackfree for backups. charmap/glyphs. all i have down is bullets anymore in memory.deathboy
    • Or you can just button mash until you get the one you need. I've done that whilst setting Turkish brochure copy.monoboy
    • @detritus, it's not as easy on Windows, not even closemonospaced
    • You really have no capacity for sensing dry humour, do you?detritus
    • I do.monospaced
    • But you were dead serious.monospaced
    • Uh huh, i was. Like a cobra.detritus
    • I know you like making fun of me, but it's not obvious your points about memorizing alt codes was a joke, because it would be necessary. Whatever.monospaced
    • Sorry, I thought it obvious that learning thousands of alt codes was a bit of a stretch. Sure, they can be 'typed easily' but that's about it :)detritus
    • (I've probably got about 15 that I remember and use over a month - beyond that I'm heading into my 40s and ..

    • So in a nutshell, it's shit. I don't get how they can release something with such basic flaws, and if it has basic flaws, whats going on in the bits youcant seecraigatkinson
    • The system was built for windows software that relies on auto-formatting for any kind of aesthetic editing. Form follows function.monoboy
    • Thousands of codes? Please. There are tons of people who use Windows and have to learn a handful of them or just type like the symbols don't exist.monospaced
    • hundreds? stop being so literal, mono

      mono, please.

      please, mono.

      not so literal.

      there's no need.

      no need, mono.
      detritus
    • mono?detritus
    • i know a lot of alt codes not hundreds or thousands but a lot, learned that shit for basic and pascal coding, not because of windowssted
    • and for some reason they can easily come out when they need to. when i have to do this on one of our macs it just suxx opening the charmap every time.sted
