best answer to getting paid in exposure..
I think I've figured out a decent response to the "do it for Exposure" BS that people tell artists. I'm going to ask what your "Exposure Package" entails because this is business. If you are essentially offering to do marketing for me, I need to know what marketing package I'm getting. I need numbers, market research, cold hard facts and a damn good strategy (I have a business degree so you can't just feed me a line). If you want to give me exposure, that's fine, just know that you better be serious about it. Oh and you'll need to sign the contract so I can make sure you do follow through. If you'd rather not go through all of that, because, let me tell you, it's a big commitment on your part, you could just PAY ME what I'm worth instead and save us both the hassle.
Artist friends, please, don't allow people to take advantage of you and don't perpetuate the culture that makes it OK for people to give us the 'exposure' line. It's not OK for creatives to be treated as a joke, not paid what they're worth and for the 'starving artist' stereotype to be constantly perpetuated. That's why so many people don't want to be artists, it's just too much of a hassle.
- "exposure package" love it.sea_sea
- agree for the most part but you lost me with your last 2 sentences. no shortage of wannabe artists, probably more today than ever. what you seem to seem to talkspl33nidoru
- about I would refer to more as craftsman than artist. the starving artist stereotype was more of a fact than ideology, people doing it for themselves no matterspl33nidoru
- what vs obsessing over sponsors. a good read on art and $ : https://www.amazon.c…spl33nidoru

- < Which fucking planet do live on? 95% of the creatives that are offered the 'exposure' option will take it. Don't be so naive. And, if you still have all...Morning_star

- Haha. Unfortunately no one has ever fed me the exposure line, but I'll be sure to use this if they ever do.********
- Morning_star : chill, we know it depends on the industry (fashion editorials for ex) but usually, working without getting paid is just screwing yourself over.spl33nidoru
- I've had quite a few.pango

- A good line (in place of "fuck off") is: "Thanks, but if I was going to work for the exposure, I'd find a company that people have heard of."********
- You can change the last line to be more or less of a dick, too. "I'd find a company that has more industry prestige."********
- "... a serious player in your industry." "... a reputation for success." "... a successful company". You get the drift.********
- also, i want to point out, which looking back i may not have made entirely clear, but i didnt write this.. only the first lineautoflavour
- Don't listen to nb. Never be less of a dick.********
- You can rephrase it to be more of a dick.********
