I don't get how this can happen? I thought Best Practice was to store a check hash, not the actual password, in user databases?

and lots of systems use
MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512, RipeMD, WHIRLPOOL, SHA3.sted - all of those are highly secure provided you use new salt on every serverspot13
- yeah the problem is if for example you create an account with the same password u use in every system, on a site running outdated version of wordpress.sted
