Book were with us for 1000s of years and yet with each new invention what a book meant to the society at the time has changed. The OP correctly has observed that the change is real and that will means something specific (something we probably can't figure out as we are in the mids of it).
"[Something] is dead" is a nice way to speculate about the extremes even though it never reflects the thinking of the culture. The painting is dead, the art is dead, the anything is dead didn't exactly come true.
