Water on Mars: Nasa faces contamination dilemma over future investigations

    http://www.theguardian.com/scien…

"Researchers at the space agency are keen for the Curiosity rover to take a closer look at the long dark streaks created by liquid water running down craters and canyon walls during the summer months on Mars.

But the rover is not sterile and risks contaminating the wet areas with earthly bugs that will have hitched a ride to the planet and may still be alive."

haha... so now we're worried about contaminating a planet that we simply wanted to know more about... ... seriously- why bother going... why not plan ahead? Were 'we' so arrogant that we didn't think of 'contamination' ahead of time?

    • Why is this a problem? Couldn't they simply identify the bugs they do find as being from Earth?iCanHazQBN
    • They are always serious about contamination but it's not always easy to send something perfectly clean.monospaced
    • I'll ask again... why bother?PonyBoy
    • I guess the idea of preserving a planet in its natural state is a big deal for NASA. They have an entire department dedicated to it.monospaced
    • no... numbnuts... why bother going?

      :)
