A virus epidemic or a sudden weather/environmental change can kill half the stock of an animal specie. These who survive have stronger immune systems or are better adapted in some way, and will pass their genes to the next generation

Humans' success comes from the fact that we have evolved beyond the stubborn flesh of our bodies. We adapted ourselves by building hospitals, medicine and science, but all fo this is impossible on the level of each autonomous individual. Ie. you alone cannot invent molecular biology
