    any .mid file is a MIDI file. If a soft synth or software in general is able to import .mid then you are in business. One of my favourite things to do is import a MIDI (.mid) files into a soft synth like Reason or Orion and the like and then the sequencer area seperates the MIDI file into tracks and then you can replace the original instruments with new ones and play it and destroy it and slice and dice it, tempo-based etc, etc.
