The reason I find it sad—and I think a lot of people would agree—is that he (as part of the Beatles), wrote many of the songs that became the soundtrack to my life. Certain milestones can be marked by songs, and to this day they evoke strong memories. The poetry and music he left behind is timeless. Yes, he lived a long life and the Beatles broke up decades ago, but they live on in their music and the memories they heightened for the majority of the world. They documented revolutions, social and political movements, crossed borders and brought people together, and wrote some of the best love songs ever written. So, even though it's just another loss of life, it's one that people will mourn simply through association and the things he left the world with.
