    I have Hero 3 Black. Being used to shoot 720p with Canon 5D Mk2, the quality is unimpressive. It's a toy, with fixed focus, the video is plasticky, and so on. The advantage is you can put the camera in places you wouldn't ever put your 5D in.

    I don't remember exact differences between models. For a 12 year old's surfing shots, I'd expect White to be good enough. She won't be using iPhone remote control in the water, or shoot in low light I suppose.

    There'll be accessories to spend on: harnesses, mount kits, SD cards, hard drives to store all the material, batteries, LCD back, etc. BTW, third-party mount kits on ebay are as good as original and you'll save a lot.

    I never used White or Silver myself though. Just wanted to say, if you're dissatisfied with their quality, you'll likely be underwhelmed with Black too.
