The irony of it all — and it's not a sad sort of irony, not a quasi-witty sort that a hipster claims to appreciate — is a discussion I had with a mainstream hip-hop loving junior copywriter at work this week:
Me: Would you mind putting your headphones on? I don't like hip-hop, and I need to concentrate on my work. Thanks.
CW: Err, all right. (pause) What kind of music _do_ you like? You never like anything I play.
Me: Mostly industrial, darkwave and EBM, and a smattering of 80s/90s thrash metal.
CW: Industrial? What's that? What would be some industrial bands? (Keep in mind he's 25).
Me: Err ... well, bands like Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Funker Vogt, KMFDM, et cetera. The Sisters of Mercy on the darkwave side. For example.
CW: Never heard of any of 'em.
Me: Most people haven't ... (dawn of realisation) fuck me. I'm a 39-year-old hipster. Ugh.
