scarabin, here's a possible variation for achieving the image you wanted:
1: Use either glass or plexiglass, cover one side with wide clear tape.
2: Transfer the image by either tracing from a paper print set underneath, or easier for large scale,would be to simply draw the image directly on the tape.
3: Cut the image out with an exacto, then sandblast until you reach the desired depth. Peel tape away.You can either drill holes in plexiglass or frame either material for hanging, similar to the hanging art in that video ^ and your use of lighting systems makes this what could be a cool part of your exhibit. You can outsource the sandblasting for minimal cost btw. :D
