I know people say alcohol is a drug and I've seen it's addictive and destructive sides first hand but saying "drugs killed him" seems more like you're talking about harder drugs like heroine, cocaine, Oxycontin etc etc etc.
I don't know his personal habits and he could have very well been using hard drugs but I draw a very big distinction between a drug addict and an alcoholic.
Coffee and caffeine are the most widely used "drugs" in the world but no one calls habitual users "drug addicts"
