    and, it does have a lot to do with encryption software and policies.

    it is common knowledge that any software or hardware that makes use of encryption can not a) be imported into the US or b) exported from the US.

    it has to do with national security.

    take PGP for example. if you want to download PGP, and you live outside the US, then you have to use an alternate web site that is hosted outside of america.

    now, there are plenty of loopholes - because i can go to pgpi.org and download pgp freely and i live in the midwest.

    i have not had any black suits beat down my door yet. but really it isn't about one citizen using encrypted software, it is about products and information being used in a 'wrongful' way.

    it has been like that since software licensing began. nothing has changed about it - except what countries are on the list.
