    I'm not sure if that's on the instructions or not to be honest, I read about this on some blog way before than the gopros existed, and that kinda kept on my mind for some reason, not sure if that is the reason I didn't have problems w the housing, but that's what I've been doing.

    You could try wiping the rubber to clean it a bit, but my guess now it's too late huh? if something tiny like a little stone (the ones that you might drag to your house on your shoe for example) gets caught on the rubber, that can create some sort of dent, that lets water flow and it's already ruined.
