Microsoft have spent the last two decades trying to be all things to all people - ostensibly, for the consumers benefit, actually for their own monopolistic intentions.

Apple, on the other hand, have spent the last decade trying to create restricted-use consumer items that fulfill a base set of criteria, but otherwise lock the consumer in to a resticted environment. Apple's reasoning is ostensibly to create a problem-free environment for their consumers, actually for their own monopolistic purposes.

Apple's game was smarter - they not only got their monopoly. but they locked consumers into an environment where they're happy to pay 30% Apple tax whilst claiming they're on a better, freer, more creative and individualistic platform.

Microsoft were last decade's bad guys - Apple are this and the next's.
