I currently choosing a compact and I'm choosing between the lx5 s95 and s100. S95 is only an option bexuase its cheaper than the s100.
The lx5 has the superior macro with 1cm close focus vs the canons 3cm, but the major differences are the aperture through the zoom range.
Sure they are both f2 at 24mm, but the lx5 is 3.3 at 90mm vs the canons 5.6 at iirc 110mm. The lx5 gets a lot more light in So if you zoom a lot in slightly low light the lx5 is gonna be better.
The other quite big difference is pocketability. The s100 is a fair chunk smaller.
The video on the lx5 is ok, it has manual control which is ace but because of the sensor type you get serious light banding with highlights during video with the lx5. The canons are much better with video, but no manual control.
The JPEG difference is also quite major. People say the lumix has a green cast, which I think is true, but I still like the images. The canons are known for better white balance and color reproduction, although to me they seem very white, slightly over exposed, but that's easily fixed whilst shooting.
I am personally going to go with an s95 or s100 purely for the pocketablitly, and the better video is a bonus. I would love an lx5 which is as small as the s95, but the wider aperture throughout the zoom range is what makes the lx5 larger (Same as the Olympus xz-1). Its also nice having in built lens cap on the Canon, more convenient.
The lens ring is awesome too on the canons. Hope that helps! :)
