If you live in a decent-sized city, your local AIGA show will be enjoyable. Higher chances of getting work in, and you get to mingle with the crowd on opening night.

As far as others go, things like Under Consideration's BNA Awards seem to offer a lot of visibility. Then there are the more traditional ones, like CA, Print, HOW, Type Directors Club, Addys, ADC, Graphis, The One Show, The Mohawk Show (that one's free!) and the mother-of-all-nearly-impossible... D&AD.

For graphic design, I'd say the better ones to enter in terms of visibility are CA, Print, TDC, Addys, Coupe, and maybe HOW. But, HOW is geared more toward designers in the early stages of their careers. I don't know anyone who reads Graphis anymore, but I could be wrong.

Seriously, though... these days getting published by a reputable industry blog provides more recognition than many of the traditional design competitions.
