hey now - a few comments up i believe the term 'hillbilly' was used wrongly. my best friend is a hillbilly. he's also one of the most well educated people i've ever met. the hillbilly culture is often confused for 'redneck' - but the 2 are very much different. I've spent a great deal of time in the hills of eastern ky and virginia with people that identify as hillbillies. for the most part, they are all incredibly smart, talented, productive, hard working, and caring. they can trace their ancestry back to the scotts-irish and many know some of the original tribal languages - preserved outside of their native countries. they're not the inbred, ignorant, lazy drunks that they are often portrayed as.

in fact - my friend is putting together a book of history currently. he's been traveling back into the mountains and visiting some of the oldest generations still alive and writing down the oral histories that have been passed down - for the sake of the future, before the culture is lost completely. it's quite a neat project.

anyway - i usually read this thread and take all the opinions as entertainment - but that one hit a bit close to home.
