Mcdonlads - Relates to their history (the design of their first few stands I believe), says something about who they are.

HP - Looks pretty techy to me, says something about what they do.

Atari - Looks like a spaceship or racing game, says something about what they do.

Lego - Looks like it's for kids, says something about what they do.

Shell - Relates to their history, says something about who they are.

Starbucks - The mermaid looks enlightened, relating to caffeine (stimulant), says something about what they do.

Comedy Central - Backwards/upside letters/words are playful/humerous, says something about what they do.

QBN - Looks like a wax stamp or stamp of approval. Relates to the approved content provided, says something about what they do.

A logo is an opportunity to communicate some aspect of the brand, but that doesn't mean it absolutely has to do this, of course it doesn't have to be literal.

BTW the whole critique process is HUGELY valuable in the design process, the very first thing I was tought is how to get over your ego and make the most of the opportunity.
