If it's urgent, and you notified them of this fact in the email (or maybe even in the subject so they spot it right away), it's better etiquette to respond to you quickly. Even with a "I will get back to you soon."
If it's not urgent, the timing is up in the air. I'd say a few days is fine. Some people allocate a set time to go through emails so they're not overwhelmed or thinking about it constantly. It's a system they have in place as a form of time management / organization too.
People expect email to be like instant messaging now.
With social networking and using that in leisure time, I find myself being more self-conscious about not answering emails as more and more clients become your "friends" on FB or "follow" you on Twitter. I try to shoot out an email saying something like "I'm working on it" or "I will respond soon" to reassure the client.
