what do you mean you don't generally use contracts?????
sorry, i have no sympathy for you if you don't have any common business sense.
an invoice is not a signed contract, it is a bill. without a signed contract you have no legal stance. in situations like this, verbal agreement is hard to prove and win against...it comes down to he said he said, and since you don't have contracts, then more than likely the larget, more solid 'business' will win in the end.
all designers/developers should work with contracts. there should be no delivery or even planning work done until a signed contract is in place and both you and the client are clear on the project objectives.
