never buy anything you haven't listened to (unless you're in a thrift store and its cheap enough to have a punt) as even good producers that you know have their off days. or unless you're rich enough to throw you money away.
don't go on the basis of a review alone, listen to suggestions but don't be sold to - make your own mind up.
you can't beat hanging out in a good record store (dancetracks, satellite and vinylmania if you're in new york) where you can listen to record beginning to end (a catchy break or bassline sounds great for a few bars but the track might not go anywhere) if you can't get to a good store find a site with the longest samples.
http://www.gemm.com/ if you're after something particular.
...and don't go shopping stoned.
