quark is releasing 6.1 with panther support in a few weeks....here's a snippit...
"CreativeMac noted in November that Quark was planning on introducing QuarkXpress 6.1 in the "very near future". The update is said to have Panther support, performance enhancements, better Excel integration and font tools.
here is some another artical
I am back from an Apple seminar in Brussels (Belgium). Quark was there, and on one of the G5 in the show-room was installed (to my surprise) Quark XPress version6.1. Not a beta version....a real final version 6.1!!
There are some new features, but essentially many bugs are fixed, and it is Panther compatible. My friend was ecstatic when he tested successfully the short-cut allowing to increase/decrease the size of a letter, it was the same emotion with the function allowing to rotate a bloc degree by degree. Finally the function allowing to import a document in its native application inside Quark XPress... no more need of the free Xtension from Badia...
Regarding speed and performance, with Panther on a Dual G5 2GHz and 2GB of RAM (with a n Apple 20" flat screen), it was amazingly fast!!!
Quark is claiming that the pdf exporting function is as performant as Adobe Distiller... well I could not test it ...
But I have found the table function either still a bit "bugged" or less performant than Indesign. But there is a big news (which could bring back Quark in its monopoly position...):
QUARK DYNAMIC DOCUMENT SERVER (Quark DDS).
This a server allowing to convert (real time) a XP file into a file which could be open via TCP/IP, on internet, by another user without requiring XPress!!! it is fully functional and it is integrated inside your web browser. It should be compatible with all XPress version (la 3, la 4, la 5 et la 6).
