I'd ask yourself what is equitable beyond the paycheck? If you are no better position after 12 months of work, then its a gamble that didn't pan out. Seems like the bigger companies do this, and its typically because of a political concession (but sometimes greed). Most smart HR people wont hire this way, because the logic is that you are likely to leave once a better role comes your way (vs a hungry candidate that wants to make a commitment).
If you do it, you might want to negotiate for a review after 6 months to give yourself better odds of coming out on top down the road.
