Cars/tents? Yikes, that wouldn't be fun through the desert and the country is so large that you wouldn't be able to find safe camping anywhere, that's for sure. It is cheaper though. All day driving takes about four days, but I'm sure you'd extend it.
I'd say definitely view the natural beauty, from the national parks that include Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon all the way to Yosemite. Go to the mountains of Colorado, the Mojave desert, the beaches in southern California.
