i know how to do it in modo.. you need to set locators and snap them to the centers of the item mesh where they rotate around, so if you move the ends of the bones, you can just move the locators to the new centers of of the ends of the bones to the joints you moved...
not sure if that helps or you already new it, but i just learnt it 2 days ago..
