It has had its day, the activity of 'Graphic Design' is not progressive, it has purely become a component of 'Free Market Capitalism'. The 'Designer' does not influence the public with new ideas, graphic culture is not about the individual, we do not celebrate individualism, as we a lead to believe. Its blocked all the time by the state or private interests. Its one of the 'modern' myths of western society.
One of the best examples in recent years has been street art/grafitti. Individuals decided that public space should not belong to the state or corporate/private interest. The started to communicate there own messages and ideas in their public space and this was immediately labeled as vandalism and an illegal act. This one act along show the contradiction (or lies), surely any society who believes in 'individualism' as a 'truism and is the foundation of any liberal democracy would actively promote and encourage self expression and creative thinking in all parts of the 'market society'? ... we do not, we block it, art as a low priority in school, you can not communicate in public space, you are not educated to have any critical self determination, you are excluded from all of the political decision making process. Graphic design is part of the culture of 'blocking' its purely made for the purpose of profit, its not about humanity.
This is why 'ART' is more important than design and shows the power of ART over design. ART doesn't have to follow any rules and isn't controlled/regulated by an industry or authority. ART is the one true form of create communication for humanity.
