Graphic Design's definitely had its day, the 60's/70's was the most experimental and progressive. There was a kind of 're-birth' in the 90's with RayGun, DR, etc - But thats all gone now. Whats left is a very ridged industry controlled by agency people who work in marketing. London is full of good commercial studios, but there is no culture of 'cutting edge' or experimental work, its just full of people hanging out in Shoreditch worrying about the way they look.
If I was you, i would get into Art, its the only field where its not completely influence or controlled by the markert.
