    Spain: Parliament Dissolved

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/2…

Spain dissolved Parliament on Monday and an early general election was formally scheduled for Nov. 20, with polls predicting that the governing Socialists would lose by a wide margin. The popularity of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who announced last year that he would not seek a third term, has plunged as the unemployment rate soared to about 21 percent, the highest in the developed world. The Socialist government has been forced to adopt unpopular austerity measures to rein in Spain’s public deficit and calm market fears that the country may need a financial bailout. If the election were to take place now, the conservative opposition Popular Party would capture an absolute majority in Parliament, according to a poll published Monday in the Catalan daily El Periódico.
