I think Migration Assistant for Snow Leopard got a Lion compatibility update recently so I don't think there will be a problem with moving your stuff this way. I think I would prefer it over a Time Machine update.
License-wise, some programs are tied to serial numbers but it's rare and can be fixed quickly.
I normally clone all of my MB content to new computer with something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! but this would require you to upgrade to Lion on the old computer first. It seems a bit pointless but could be just the thing for you if you want to stay on Snow Leopard for some time. Current Pro lineup should still run SL while new models are sure not to.
