I lived in greenpoint for 2 years near McGolrick park, not many people know there is a park just a 10 minute walk from McCarren, it's a nice little neighborhood with some local bars and restaurants to hit up. If you don't mind a walk to the train in the AM it's pretty great.
I lived on the cusp of Bushwick when I lived on grand street a while back, it's give and take. I would say 90% of the time If felt fine / safe / accepted in the neighborhood. The other 10% were just sketchy characters getting in my business. But if you mind your own and walk with confidence you're pretty much safe.
I live in williamsburg now off the Graham stop, and this area is all 23-35 years old and have a similar mindset of not butting into people's business. Its generally safe but you never know.
But if you're looking for a little peace and quiet where you live i recommend Greenpoint.
