I've just worked out that if you want a flickr user name containing a space that's already taken, just enter the username with a double space, then upon viewing your profile it is shown with only one space.
eg, if you want 'John Smith' and its taken, just enter 'John Smith' and it will work and show it with a single space.
I'll be hacking the pentagon next week.
