    I blame the "intelligent machine with human personality traits" genre of film and television shows of the 80s for instilling in us a misplaced trust in the vehicles we drive. Knight Rider, Viper and the whole Herbie catalogue have fooled us into thinking that, when things get out of hand, the car will override our failings and save the day.
