Yeh, if you do this sort of thing, you're likely to get beaten up sooner or later, especially in Scotland. Leave people along or they're going to take great exception to you badgering them, especially on someone else's unbidden behalf, it's just naive. If they don't want to help, well, frankly that's their look out, you can't judge them for that. The world's a fucking horrible place, and its horrors exceed your imagination, and you won't stop constantly being exposed to new and darker parts of it. Fight it in small steps. Give the guy some of your money, or your food, or engage these people with respect and see if they have any leftovers. Buy him dinner then fuck off without trying to get any glory or thanks, quit being so fucking noble, it makes you look like a twat.
Which I'm sure you're not - hang on to your sense of outrage about the inequities you see around you, do something about it.
