I've also wondered if the Japanese Flag wasn't such a great visual starting place would there be only a fraction of these?

- I did a few designs (not tees) here in Japan, for Japanese companies (and for free). They turned down the ideas where the flag was used. They don't want to see their flag in trouble, overly batshit crazy patriotic as they are. So likely, any design with the Japanese flag you see that comes with a motif of trouble or distress is likely made and sold outside Japan.Peter
