    Like CygnusZero4 says, I don't think there's any actual legal difference between getting laid off and getting fired. More of a semantic difference.

    In effect, there is only "getting fired." But you can say "I got laid off" as long as you didn't get caught injecting heroin in the bathroom or banging the boss' daughter or whatever.

    • laid off comes with severance and a chance for rehire in most caseslogi
    • so I guess I have only been laid off since I had generous severance and still get referralsduhsign
    • it still feels like being fired no matter what they call it and even if you do get the severence
