Check out Barrington, and head down around the water front. Also cut across the Library on Spring Garden to Pizza corner, then head down Argyle Street, some nice shops and pubs that way.
If you end up going to Athens, Quinpool Road has some great stores and an old movie theatre to check out. If you do end up moving here to go to school, this would be the neighborhood to live in. Everything you need is on Quinpool, plus beautiful old houses (many converted to flats) to the North and South.
