Paul Rand, you're on to something with Love and Arthur Lee.

To answer the question: Beatles Beatles Beatles. They dominated the century, let alone their decade. So many groundbreaking firsts. First British, first printed lyrics, first to be famous and not tour, be famous and espouse the experimentation with drugs, record label, many musical instruments, world beat, sampling (I Am the Walrus), avant garde in pop, the list goes one. Three brilliant songwriters, took shit from no one.

Elvis Costello is great too though.

Oh, that old Elvis, he was a good singer. Didn't write any of his songs, but was more of a poster boy who got a whole lot of credit for doing things done earlier and probably better by people like Chuck Berry, who was a great musician and songwriter. But let's face, it. Chuck, Little Richard and the Coasters were black, it was the 50s, and Elvis was a hollywood icon.
