    just because your client wants something like barneys or tiffanys it doesn't mean that's what you have to do.
    usually companies with that type of logo that consists of letters alone are companies that have strong identity. Like Microsoft. You defiently need to make that logo into something people will remember, that will stick in their minds after they see a business card. You still can be classy yet creative. Think Apple computers. That is classy yet creative, the tyfeface stands out, it's easy to remember, plus it has an apple as an icon, which turned out to become one of the greatest american icons.
