Yeah no. There's not much you can do. That's why DSLRs have become so popular. If you do want to use a vid cam, you can always get a 35mm adapter that will allow you to mount SLR lenses and get that shallow DoF. Unfortunately, you'd have to spend $3K+ on the vid cam anyway, so I'd just get a DSLR.

If you're so worried about something being overhyped, go shoot with an HVX200 ($3K+) and a canon t2i ($700 body). You tell me what image you like better.

Also, you have to buy the same amount of accessories for an camcorder style cam as you would a DSLR (matte box, follow focus, rails, cage, etc...), let alone the fact that you can't easily change lenses.

Audio is easier on camcorders, though. Aaaand, that NEX-VG10 looks pretty sweet. I wonder how the lens selection is/will be.

    • those adapters eat light, so you have to shoot at higher ISO, get grain & heavy rig on tripod...changes shooting style alotvaxorcist
    • Audio with XLR is nice, but we've used Marantz digital audio recorders instead mostly...vaxorcist
    • those marantz recorders are goodMikeColdFusion
