    I have an epson 2200 - it's 3 generations old by now, but it prints out some smooth-ass pictures. It does band a lot if you don't print regularly, and the ink is expensive. It prints up to 13x19 sheet (and takes pretty much every sort of media), and it also prints roll stock - you can get a cutter attachment for it for this purpose. 6 ink cartridges, prints are supposed to last 100 years.

    by now you can get an epson r2400, the successor (2 gens old) for $300 used - this may be a good option. the current printer in this line is the r2880 ($600 new).
