I am a fellow UCSD alumni. Class of 04.

Double majored in Interdisciplinary Computing & the Arts (ICAM) and history.

Their communications/poly sci departments are very well respected. My wife also went there and double majored in comm/poly sci.

Overall my experience was a good one, but UCSD is different than many other colleges in that it really lacks a solid campus life and the surrounding community is anything but a college town. I think making it a good experience will depend a lot on the people you meet and the relationships you seek out once you're there. There just aren't that many opportunities for meeting people that fall into your lap, especially if you're a commuter student.

As for the Arts dept... I personally found it to be a little but elitist, but at the time I was heavy into design - not art. UCSD does NOT teach design, so perhaps part of the problem was my own attitude back then. My art courses were also heavy on theory, which bored me to pieces. I graduated with a disdain for art which took a while to go away, but again I think a lot of that is due to my lack of maturity at the time.

Fortunately my experience in the History dept. really made up for all that. I found those classes to be extremely rewarding, even if I forget most of what I learned by now.

Feel free to email me with questions.

    • Thanks. I will take you up on that. Comm/Poly Sci is what I am leaning towards also. Has you wife found a good job?HijoDMaite
