honestly this is hard to pitch, I don't know why you worked 6 months with out nailing down a price. If I invest more than 40hrs. in a project I will have a contract for them, if a contract scares them off then that might something about their ethics.
also I don't catch mention of where he was located, and where the client waslocated. Price for design and dynamics (flash, programming,etc) can range so greatly from place to place and person to person. Rarely do I see a real link between quality and price. I more often see the price as factor that relates to ego, and salesmenship.
if the client is happy, charge what you feel is fair for your effort. From a designers point of view this seems to be a substandard site (the sound loops being an example). so I wouldn't try to milk the cow on it.
we all start somewhere, and strive to make ourselves better at what we do. From what I have seen of the site, its clear that you can make it as a designer, you may not be awarded anything from your peers but you can pay your bills.
focus on cutting work time, attention to details and contracts that don't leave you guessing what your getting.
