  A camera you will take with you is the one to buy. I've got a little $150 canon (sd1200) that takes fantastic photos, and it's small enough to carry all the time. My DSLR with fast glass rarely gets taken out, though it does take marginally better pictures.

  Spend the extra 850 on a DSLR for quality stuff, but I bet you'll take more photos with the P&S.
