Don't just send your resume on a piece of paper if you know other people are applying for the same job. There are other designers who can most likely do exactly what you can. I designed a little portfolio booklet and mailed it to companies. That way, when the creative directors are sorting through resumes, your booklet (or whatever piece you create) will definately stand out the most. Of course, a creative presentation won't make up for bad design. If you aren't a good designer then you gotta find employment from someone who doesn't know good design from bad design, or take a crappy salary. I prefer creative companies who do/know good design...
