it's probably due to Apple's subpixel font rendering (equivalent to ClearType on windows), Apple's algorithm goes for curve accuracy over sharpness. Where as Windows' goes for sharpness over accuracy. As a result, Apple's type tends to look thicker and fuzzier than cleartype. PC Safari users will see this in as well (Apple ported over their type engine).
