I've got some experience with the standard non-roadster model.
if you use it for it's purpose - city driving, it's great, however if you plan on using it outside, i.e highways etc, it sucks. Full thottle for 10 minutes(!) and the bastard didn't pass 130 km/h (about 75 mph?!) The engine is ridiculously small.
If you just need a city veichle, get a scooter, but if you want a car for road trips, vacations etc there's lots of slightly bigger cars with all the luxury cheaper than that. The biggest mistake with the Smart is that it's too darned expensive. Kinda ruins the purpose, as there's no luxury or anything whatsoever. Okay maybe there's people who doesn't care about that but you're gonna get SO sick of the plastic automatic transmission that changes gear whenever it wants to when running 400 rpms and the steering wheel that's barely attached. Trust me.
But word is the Roadster fixed most of these things, so that would be your best bet I THINK, i haven't driven it.
