    d_rek is on the right track here. Go for 100% component and leave yourself room to upgrade to your specifications. Get a good receiver that will accommodate your components (enough HDMI inputs, optical/digital audio, etc...) and a nice set (same brand, ideally) of front speakers (Center and Fronts). Down the line you can add surround speakers (the rears aren't as important, imo).

    I have a Sony ES receiver, Polk Audio CS series fronts/center and a Polk Audio PSW110 sub to fill in the lows. The sound is seamless , nearly true flat-response, and very impressive. I would recommend this for anyone looking to get into decent audio while remaining well under $3K. Good luck!
