new site is a step back. way too much going on. main navigation is totally unclear. you don't need to list narrative, music video, etc. umpteen times. it's a design flourish that just ends up being confusing and visually annoying. i think if you have a look around at other portfolios, you'll find that a lot of successful people use a grid layout. why? because it allows you to show a decent amount of thumbnails of work in an efficient manner. if you look at your category pages, you're using no more than 20% of the screen real estate (i.e. the thumbnails jammed against the left margin) once you start scrolling. it's a complete waste, and it's also a problem with your current site.

further, there's no sense of hierarchy. where is the important work? what do yuo want potential clients to know you've worked on at first glance? maybe bubble up some key projects on the home page so you can feature things you're most proud of or that you feel will bring you the most new work.

i would recommend taking a step back and asking yourself exactly what problems you're trying to solve with this redesign. if it's soley to get potential clients to your work in a faster and more efficient way (as you implied above), i don't think you've met your goal.

and, finally, aesthetically, the graphic design is messy, cluttered and hard to parse. if i'm a client, i don't want my eyes buggered up with a bunch of spray paint and weird ascii crap when i'm just trying to find your phone number.

i'm writing quickly so please excuse the terseness here. just wanted to get the ideas down.
