Columns are popular because they serve a huge purpose. Readability. The measure of a line (number of characters) can either enhance or diminish the ease in which content can be read and comprehended.
A line that is too long, might cause the user to unintentionally re-read a line multiple times. A line that is too short, will decrease comprehension and flow due to the extreme line-breaks and fragmentation.
Guidelines of efficiencies in how to enhance comprehension and readability have been established for hundreds of years.
Column width is related to your type size, but I usually shoot for an alphabet and a half (somewhere around 40 characters), but it depends on the project and amount of content, and the feel you're going for.
